January 10, 2005
THE BOLLES SCHOOL head coach CORKY ROGERS has selected
a further 16 players to make up the 36-man roster that
will compete in the NFL Global Junior Championship IX
during the week of Super Bowl XXXIX.
Rogers originally named 20 scholar athletes when he started
building his all-star squad in December and is now preparing
to take his completed roster to the practice field ahead
of the first round games, which will be played on February
2. A total of 24 different schools from seven north Florida
counties of St Johns, Duval, Nassau, Clay, Putnam, Baker
and Union are represented. “It’s
overwhelming to be representing the United States in an
international event,” said tight end Colin Peek,
one of three new players added from Florida 3A state champions
The Bolles School. “I’m excited to have the
chance to pull my pads on again for a few more games even
though my high school career is over.”
The 16 players added to Team USA’s 36-man roster
are: OL/DL Rance Powell (Sandalwood), OL JW Myers (Episcopal),
TE Colin Peek, WR Rocky Ross, DL John Russell (all The
Bolles School), FB/LB Tremayne Edwards (Jackson), WR Rick
Taylor, OL Buster Garrett, DL Matt Staver (all Nease),
OL Matt Stevens (Trinity), DL Michael Johns, OL Chris
Brooks (both Mandarin), RB Nick Daniels (Lee), DB Zach
Whittenburg (Hilliard), DL Ryan Southwell (Union County),
LB Rico Butler (Raines).
Team USA will take on international junior all-star teams
on Wednesday, February 2 in a fast-flowing shootout tournament.
The USA’s first opponent will be European champion
France (at 3.40pm), followed by Canada (5.20pm), Japan
(7.50pm) and Mexico (9.30pm) at Bolles’ Skinner-Barco
Stadium.
Games are played over two seven-minute halves to determine
the top two teams that will contest the Championship Game,
on Saturday, February 5 at 4:00 p.m. Tickets are available
from The Bolles School and Nease, University Christian
and Mandarin high schools, priced $6 per day. |
