ADRIAN DOGS THE IRISH AT GREYSTONES

The Adrian Bulldogs football team achieved all they were looking for on their trip to the Emerald Isle, highlighted by the 53-0 victory of the Irish All-Stars on Sunday, May 8. The game featured a powerfully balanced air and ground attack, along with a dominating defensive performance.

On a typical Irish weather day of brilliant sunshine interspersed with showers, both teams played with intensity and friendship throughout. When the "match" was over, they shook hands, swapped shirts, hats and trophies, and then friendly conversation and food in the Greystones Rugby Club hospitality room.

In the opening quarter Adrian did not allow and Irish first down, and notched 3 TD's to gain control. Running back J.T. Williams led the scoring with three running touchdowns, while fellow runner Jon Servoss also tallied a running score. The most thrilling run of the day was when Matt "Moose" Johnston rambled for 69 yards in the second quarter, before finally being dragged down from behind by the Irish defensive end. Moose also scored once.

The longest touchdown of the day was a 39 yard pass from the arm of starting QB Eric Himich to WR Joel Musielewicz. Mike Akawi was able to connect with two tight ends for scores in the second half, a 9 yarder to Corey Hardcastle and an 11 yard strike to Mike Lyall, playing his final game for the Bulldogs.

On the defensive side, Blake Childs blocked a punt and dove for a brilliant interception in the 3rd quarter to thwart an Irish drive. Adrian did not allow a first down until the 4th quarter when the home team put together a long drive to the one yard line, but stalled out as time expired.

It has been a grand week for the 46 players, coaches and family members who make this trip, and Head Coach Jim Lyall commented, "This has been a wonderful way for our players to learn firsthand about a beautiful country and people, to do it together as a team, and to get to play some football in a pristine setting."
