USA gains revenge with shutout of Canada; Mexico claims third spot in victory over Japan

TEAM USA gained comprehensive revenge for their midweek first round loss to Canada with a 31-point shutout as Katy High School head coach Mike Johnston added the NFL Global Junior Championship VIII crown to his Texas 5-A state title.

Running back Brandon Jackson (Booker T Washington) rushed for three touchdowns, wide receiver Terrance Nunn (Cy Falls) caught a spectacular 34-yard score and kicker Jason Bondzio (Humble) added a 31-yard field goal in the win.

Earlier in the day Mexico claimed third spot and the bronze medal by the same 31-0 score against Japan as running back Mario Castelan Uresti rushed for a spectacular 218 yards and 3 touchdowns.

Mexico and Japan had both beaten Russia in the opening games of the medal rounds to battle for third place. Mexican quarterback Cesar Sanchez Hernandez completed 7 of 14 attempts for 109 yards and two touchdowns and also rushed for 82 yards and a touchdown in an impressive 28-0 victory. Japan triumphed 17-0 over Russia, as quarterback Kenji Iwamoto completed 4 of 9 attempts for 91 yards and a touchdown.

USA receiver Nunn’s combined figures of 11 receptions for 223 yards and 3 touchdowns over the two days of competition earned him the USA team MVP award. Canada running back Samuel Fournier was named his team’s MVP having rushed 14 times for 117 yards and 3 touchdowns during the first round games. Quarterback Cesar Sanchez Hernandez earned the Mexican MVP, while Japan running back Takashi Miyako was honoured along with linebacker Andrey Tvorogov of Russia.

“We showed good character coming back after the loss on Wednesday,” said coach Johnston. “They were determined to make amends for letting the occasion get the better of them and they did just that today.”

In the Championship Game Jackson carried the ball 16 times for 61 yards and 3 touchdowns, while quarterback Brian Johnson (Baytown Lee) completed 10 of 21 attempts for 191 yards, one touchdown and an interception. Defensive back Michael Parker (Katy) snuffed out Canada’s challenge with two interceptions. Full game recaps are available on www.NFLHS.com
