Global Football Names Ger Brennan Honorary Chairman of the 2026 G.I.F.T. Event at Energia Park
Global Football is proud to announce that Ger Brennan, the current Dublin senior football manager and St .Vincent’s clubman, will serve as Honorary Chairman of the 2026 Global Ireland Football Tournament (G.I.F.T.) at Energia Park.
The seventh edition of G.I.F.T. takes place on Friday, 28 August 2026, at Energia Park (Donnybrook) in Dublin, with kick-off at 3:00 p.m. local time. The feature match pits Grapevine Faith Christian School (Texas) against Ambassador Christian School (North Carolina). The event forms part of the wider Aer Lingus College Football Classic program and includes a flag football showcase, cultural activities, and community engagement, with ticket proceeds supporting St. James’s Gate FC.
This appointment continues a tradition of distinguished honorary chairs for G.I.F.T., previously including figures such as former Pittsburgh Steelers Owner Dan Rooney (2012), Rear Admiral William Byrne (2023) and Rocky Bleier (2025). Ger Brennan’s connection to Brian Mullins and the G.I.F.T. Legacy
Brennan’s selection carries special resonance through his deep ties to the late Brian Mullins, the Dublin GAA icon widely regarded by Global Football as the “Guardian of the Global Ireland Football Tournament.”
Mullins, a four-time All-Ireland winner with Dublin (1974–1985) and lifelong St. Vincent’s figure, played a pivotal early role in establishing G.I.F.T. In 2011 he introduced Global Football founder Patrick Steenberge to then-GAA Director General Paraic Duffy at Croke Park and remained a steadfast supporter, mentor, and ambassador for the event until his death in September 2022. From the 2023 tournament onward, Global Football has honoured his memory through the Brian Mullins Global Ambassador Award, presented annually to one student-athlete from each participating team who best embodies leadership, passion, mentorship, and team values.
Brennan and Mullins share the same St. Vincent’s club roots. Brennan has publicly credited Mullins with shaping his philosophy, recalling how Mullins emphasised “using the skillset that you have been given to try to add value to another person’s life.” Both men also share a strong University College Dublin connection: Mullins served for 22 years as UCD Director of Sport, while Brennan has worked as GAA Development Executive at UCD (a role previously held by the late Dave Billings) and has spoken in support of the UCD Brian Mullins Ambassador Award for Gaelic Games, which supports American students pursuing studies and GAA involvement in Ireland.
Honoring Brian Mullins at the Global Ambassador Awards Ceremony
In keeping with Global Football’s ongoing tribute, the organization will present the Brian Mullins Global Ambassador Awards on the Saturday following the G.I.F.T. games (29 August 2026) at the RDS (Royal Dublin Society). The awards recognize outstanding young student-athletes who demonstrate the qualities Mullins championed: competitive excellence, leadership, and service to others—continuing the cultural and sporting bridge between Ireland and the United States that Mullins helped build.
Who is Ger Brennan?
Ger Brennan is one of the most respected figures in contemporary Dublin GAA. A former centre-back, he won two All-Ireland Senior Football Championship medals with Dublin (2011 and 2013), five Leinster titles, a National Football League title, and an All-Star award. At club level with St. Vincent’s he collected multiple Dublin, Leinster, and All-Ireland club titles, including captaining the side.
After retiring from inter-county football, Brennan coached at various levels before managing Louth (2023–2025), guiding them to their first Leinster Senior Football Championship title in 68 years in 2025. In August 2025, he was appointed Dublin senior football manager on a three-year term. A teacher by profession and a man of strong personal faith, Brennan has consistently spoken about the values of service, culture, and leaving the jersey in a better place. These principles closely align with the educational and cross-cultural mission of G.I.F.T. and Global Football.
